get the kung fu!
Topic: Ving Tsun
Students;

We are having a great time training down here in Maryland with your Kung Fu uncles. I know there are a variety of reasons why many of you could not make it to this event. At the same time I must add that in the future please try your best to make it to the next major event. These opportunities to meet and touch hands with multiple generations of quality Ving Tsun practitioners are very rare. Always try your best to take advantage of opportunities to be exposed to quality Kung Fu. Gradually Ip Man's student are reaching the point where they will once again be training with their teacher, which means we will no longer be able to train with them. We need to appreciate them while they are here.

Sifu & Todai
Topic: Ving Tsun

The student teacher relationship.

The student should respect the teacher for time and effort he has invested in getting the knowledge and skills that he/she has acquired and also the teacher should be respected for having a desire to share this knowledge for the benefit of others. The teacher did not gain this knowledge for free, even if he did not pay for it with money, time , effort , blood and sweat were paid to get the Kung Fu. The student should not expect anything from the teacher for free. Many teachers are modest and do not want to even discuss money. If you cannot pay your Sifu and he has decided he will still teach you, you need to do something in return for your teacher's graciousness. Don’t ask your Sifu what you should do, look around. There is always something that needs to be done, when you notice….go do it. Always have proper respect for your Sifu and use your best manners. You should immediately dismiss any notion that your Sifu will somehow magically transform you into a super being, all he can do is tell you which way to walk. You have to do the walking yourself. Eventually you will get where you want to be.

The teacher must understand, that it's not about you (the teacher). Many who teach martial arts became teachers in order to have people worship them. Once again…it's not about you. It IS about the mental, physical, and spiritual development of the student. It is wrong to take advantage of your with relationship with your students simply to satisfy your own needs. As teachers we must remain humble and not personally identify with how important what we do actually is. One more time…it's not about you.

Kung Fu
Topic: Ving Tsun

For those who study Kung Fu, consider the following...

Is your skill at the level you would like it to be?

If not, how much time do you spend perfecting your Kung Fu?

How far past your comfort zone do you push yourself?

Do you stop when your mind tells you to stop or when your body tells you to stop?

Many spend a lot of time practicing "intellectual kung fu" and very little time practicing actual kung fu.

Chi Sao, It's just a game...
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Ving Tsun
What is Chi Sao?

Essentially it is a game, a game that gives you the ability to deal instinctively with forces applied to your body and also use these forces to create opportunities for striking techniques. Chi - Sao is basically a means to an end, that end being efficient practical combat sensitivity. Unfortunately many people get lost in the game, never moving past it. Many try to become masters of the game. Many try to defeat the game. Few learn the lessons the game is meant to teach and then move on.

The Skills developed in chi sao are useful in the initial clash of combat if there is arm to arm contact.

1. You try to hit me and I block or intercept it.

2. I try to hit you and you block or intercept it.

3. In the clutches, you have grabbed one or both of my arms or vice versa

As you can see this is a very limited set of scenarios?

Your training should not end with chi sao?

How do you deal with a long range fighter?

How do you deal with someone who has a stick/club?

How do you deal with someone who has a knife?

How do deal with a gun? (if the person is within arms reach)

What if you are knocked to the ground?

The Ving Tsun system contains the answers to these questions

In some cases, very directly, the answer is given to you.

In others the answers may not be part of the standard Ving Tsun canon

but using a Ving Tsun way of thinking will get you to the answer.

It cant be just an intellectual exercise,

you have to experiment, find someone to work with

and discover what the system wants you to know.

B.
